The 3M half marathon was fun.

I ran the half this morning with Caroline. We kept a 12 minute pace and had a good time. I was thrilled, especially considering how little I have worked out these past couple of weeks. I went six straight days with no workouts. Then this week, I ran with Jenny on Thursday and did a treadmill run and short swim yesterday. That’s been it. I just haven’t felt well these last couple of weeks. But today I felt great. Today, I felt like myself again. I’m so glad.

The fun thing to report is that I’m all set for Canada. Tickets are purchased. The car rental is scheduled. And as of a couple of days ago, I have a motel! I was on every waiting list I could find, so I’m thrilled. The motel I got is on the bike course and is within walking distance of transition. Plus, it easily sleeps four and has a kitchen. And the guy I’ve been emailing seems extremely nice. Now I just need to get the training done.

This one is a mixed bag.

I had a good week of workouts last week. The best was a swim where we did 40 25s as hard as we could. My times ranged from 18 to 20 seconds. I tried for 17 but never saw it. Still, it was a good hard workout. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

On Sunday, Caroline and I did a 20 mile race. I did miserably for reasons totally of my own making. I went out to the Spoke on Saturday night and ended up staying out until after 1 am. Plus I had something to drink and didn’t take in much food the whole day. I made it to the starting line, but I was hurting. From the first step, it was hard, and I fell back from Caroline just a few miles in. It was pitiful. I finished the race but my time was roughly an hour longer than it should have been. I was angry at myself for blowing a big race like that.

This evening I worked out with Jake. I hadn’t had a session with him since before my surgery, so it was good to be back with him. We did upper body work since I “ran” yesterday.

Tomorrow, I’ll swim in the morning and run in the evening. I’m still a little tired from being out late both Saturday and Sunday nights. I need to get myself to bed soon. Like now.

I had a fantastic swim this morning.

I fell asleep really early last night – like 9 p.m. and failed to set my alarm for my usual 4:50 wake up call. (I had not gone swimming yesterday, so my alarm had been set for 7:00.) Somehow though, I woke up at 5 and made it to the pool. I’m so glad I did. The big set we did was 6 400s, which we did on 8 minutes. The cool part was that we descended. That wasn’t the instruction, but it is just what ended up happening. So I did the first one at 7:05 and by the end, I did 6:44. I was very happy with that and thankful to Kerry, the guy next to me, for pushing me as hard as he did.

So far so good.

I took Friday off. Saturday I did a bike ride with Poppe through heavy winds. Then on Sunday, Caroline and I ran for about 65 minutes. It was bitter cold but still fun. I took today off too. Tomorrow I swim in the morning and do yoga in the evening. It should be a good day.

I was looking back at my workouts preCoeur d’Alene and was somewhat astonished as to how much working out I was able to get in to each day. I don’t know how I kept up that intensity level, but somehow I did. I’d like to be that focused again. It’s time.

I need two half Ironman races this year. I don’t know yet what I’m doing in May, but I think Vineman will be my July race. Catherine is already registered, and the timing works out for my schedule, so I think it’s a good option. I’d like to get that firmed up during the next week or so.

Happy New Year!

So I’ve taken my resolution to slow down and be less planned very seriously. On New Year’s Eve, I opted to come home early and hang out with Bread and Butter. We went to bed early, and I woke up feeling pretty fresh this morning. Staying home was a good decision on my part.

I started out the new year with a swim at Nitro followed by a five mile run with Caroline. I have to say that it was the perfect morning. I love that I started the day with a solid workout. Plus, I enjoyed being with Caroline, Bill and the kids. Then I went out to Henly and took a nap, read a book, and ate a couple of meals. That was it. I meant to get thank you notes and various other little projects done, but no. I slept, ate and read. It was lovely.
