With Dave on His Birthday.

This time last year, I was traveling to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro. It was my third international trip of 2013, so the wonder was a bit lost during the trip preparations. It took actually getting to the airport and getting a bag checked before I felt true excitement surrounding the trip. Before my mom and I sat down for a cup of coffee together before I entered security, I felt a sadness for leaving town on Dave’s very birthday. Even on the plane, I wrote, “This is my last big trip for a while. I want so much to be at home and to spend as much time with Dave as possible.” Now, a year later, I’m home with Dave. I got what I wanted, but I was wrong about one thing. Everything that’s happened with and around Dave during the last year has been the greatest trip I’ve ever taken.  Continue reading

Saturday in Bed.

This is an unusual Saturday afternoon. I’m in bed resting. Lucky me, I got sick on Christmas Day. I went to bed at around 8 on Christmas night and slept long into the next morning. Again last night, I went to bed relatively early and slept until around 10 this morning. I’ve had to cancel tennis with an old friend, a baby shower, and time with my godson. None of that has been fun. On the upside, I’ve had lots of time at home to rest.  Continue reading

Tennis Again.

I played tennis yesterday for the first time in too long. At first, my friend Trevor and I just hit. Then we served. Then we decided to play a set. Then we decided to play another set. Overall, we played for almost two hours. I had a great time, even though he beat me badly. But this morning? Holy moly, everything hurts. My thighs, my butt, my back, my arms. Everything just hurts. Dreams.

My dreams have been disrupting my sleep. I keep a spiral notebook by my bed and was trying, for a while, to write my dreams down because sometimes they are crazy vivid. It’s a practice I started in Africa, where I would wake at times in the middle of the night and make notes in the journal that I kept inches away from my head. I’d read the notes the next morning and realize that I would have lost my dreams entirely if I hadn’t recorded them. I haven’t been doing that lately, but I had a crazy dream last night that I do remember, and I found a dream from last week that I’d started to write about in a blog post that never materialized. More Racing.

Yesterday, I ran the Decker Challenge, which is a half marathon around Decker Lake in Austin. It’s got some rolling hills and one short and steep hill that I remember doing on a bike back in my early triathlon days. I went out yesterday morning not sure what to expect and was pleasantly surprised at how the day went. Continue reading
