I slept terribly last night. When my alarm went off at 5:00 a.m., I almost texted the girls to tell them that I was bailing on our run, but I managed somehow to get my butt out of bed and to the trails. We had a lovely 5-mile run during which we got to hear about Jenny’s 30K trail race of this past weekend in West Texas. It sounds like a race that needs to land on my 2016 schedule. Then when we got back to our cars, I had the most wonderful surprise waiting for me.
Dave was there! He had worked over night as part of his training with a new company. He’s learning the ins and outs of the business he’s in, which includes understanding what the normal overnight crew does, so he’s working two overnights this week. He got off work at 6:30 a.m. and came down to the trails to surprise me for breakfast. It was lovely to see Dave’s smiling face at my car, to have an opportunity to introduce him briefly to Sommer, and to have the luxury of an unexpected breakfast with him. We drove from the trails to Magnolia Cafe, which is quite possibly my favorite spot in Austin, and spent an hour together before he went home to sleep and I went to the gym to get ready for work.
I’m thankful for my girlfriends who keep me running. I’m thankful for the gorgeous morning we had before the sun came up. I’m thankful that my body can withstand the activity that I put it through. And I’m especially thankful for a man who delivers sweet surprises even when he’s tired after a long night.
What a gift of a morning. If I’d slept in, I would have missed it!
